Begun in 1181 on the site reputed to be where St David founded a monastic settlement in the sixth century. The present building was altered during the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries and again in the sixteenth. It also has an extension added in 1993, so the architecture is varied. The ceilings - oak, painted wood and stone vaulting are of considerable interest. The floor of the nave slopes a metre over its length while over the entire length of the cathedral the difference is four metres. In addition to services there are organ recitals on Wednesdays from late July through to early September. Last year a splendid new refectory opened offering fresh local food.
