Scottish Tourist Board 5 star Visitor Attraction. Built in 1758 to the design of John Adam, Paxton House is among Britain's finest eighteenth century country houses. The twelve period rooms hold one of the finest collections of Chippendale and Trotter furniture in Britain. The restored Regency Picture Gallery, the largest in any Scottish country house, acts as an outstation of the National Galleries of Scotland with over 70 paintings from its collection. Set within 80 acres of beautiful gardens, woodland and riverside, Paxton House is home to a variety of walks and trails. Enjoy rare shrubs, rhododendrons and herbaceous borders, a fountain and well garden as well as a putting green, croquet lawn and excellent wildlife viewing hides for red squirrels, riverside and woodland birds. Two adventure playgrounds, picnic areas, house trails and nature detective trails together with Paxton Teds Super Fundays (every Tuesday, July and August) make Paxton a great place for children. Visit the restored working Georgian kitchen, complete with active charcoal stoves and baking oven. The Rod Fishing Museum tells the story of The Ellem Fishing Club, the world's oldest club, using interactive displays and full scale models comparing traditional and contemporary costume. With all this plus our gift shop, licensed tea room and an exciting program of events and exhibitions, Paxton House is an essential day out for everyone! Please note photography is restricted to outdoor only.
