Lewes Castle is one of the oldest castles in England (built shortly after the Norman Conquest) and is one of only two castles in England to be built on two mounds. Although never attacked, Lewes Castle played a part in the Battle of Lewes in 1264 and the Peasant's Revolt in 1381. The panoramic views over the county town of Lewes, the River Ouse and the surrounding Downs are worth the climb up the Keep. The Barbican House Museum (adjacent to the Castle) tells the story of Sussex from the Stone Age to the end of the medieval period. Displays include flint tools, pottery, weapons, jewellery and other archaeological discoveries. It also houses a model of the town of Lewes during the Victorian period at around 1870. Special family sessions on archaeological and historical themes are run throughout the year. Other events include a Medieval Day in May and open-air theatre and music.
