Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton has been a working Blue John mine since 1750 and open to the public as a visitor attraction since 1935. Visitors can see some of the finest stalactites and stalagmites in the Peak District whilst also experiencing the beauty of Blue John Stone. The largest areas of Blue John Stone ever revealed can be fully appreciated by the light of newly installed spotlights. The largest single piece ever discovered can still be seen in situ. This underground wonderland also contains thousands of stalactites and stalagmites plus all kinds of rocks, minerals and fossils. Multi coloured flowstone covers the walls of Aladdin's cave, whilst the most famous formation is The Stork, standing on one leg. The Cavern is enjoyed by visitors of all ages from all over the world. No wheelchair access - walking disabled only. Facilities for partially deaf visitors.
