Description: Exeter's Underground Passages were originally constructed in medieval times, and were built so that underground drinking water pipes could be repaired without digging up the roads and causing disruption to the crowded city. Today visitors can see an interpretation centre with fun and interactive exhibits, a high-speed passages fly through, and full scale passages model. The visitor centre also features the story of water in Exeter and information about the archaeological dig that took place on the Princesshay site, including displays of some of the main finds. The tour starts with a video introduction to the passages, followed by a 25 minute guided tour accompanied by a tour guide. The passages are constricted, and have low vaults, rough floors and dark areas. For this reason they are not suitable for anyone with claustrophobia or for children under 5 years. Wheelchair access is to the visitor centre only.
