Britain's largest collection of working steam, Hollycombe is much more than an enthusiast's museum. Rather than just studying engines from the past, there is a complete, working Edwardian fairground and three different railways, all of which visitors can ride on. The emphasis is on enjoyment while recreating the golden age of steam, from a time when Britain was great. In addition, there are rides behind a steam traction engine, old film shows in the Bioscope, the forerunner of town cinemas, agricultural machinery and a whole lot more, all set in acres of historic woodland gardens. A new visitor centre brings the experience up to date while information signs and a brand new gallery around the site explain what is on show. While there are special events throughout the season, late May brings out the best in the gardens when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in flower.
