Strutt's North Mill and Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Built in 1804, William Strutt's technologically advanced 'fire-proof' mill shows by displays and original machinery the history and process of cotton spinning, the story of framework knitting, 'Brettles' renowned silk and cotton hosiery collection, Derbyshire's unique chevening and nailmaking. Leaders of the Industrial Revolution, the Strutt family changed Belper into a thriving industrial town. Our trained guides provide entertaining and informative tours, or we have self-guided audio handsets. Children can count the 'mill mice' and earn a certificate and a treat. The mill shop has books, gifts, drinks and snacks, and the adjacent renowned River Gardens has a playground, boating on the river and a bandstand.
