Hedingham Castle was built in 1140 by Aubrey de Vere II and was the home of the de Veres, Earls of Oxford for 550 years. The Castle was besieged by King John in 1216, and attacked by the Dauphin of France in 1217. Hedingham has welcomed many royal visitors including King Henry VII, King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. The Keep stands over 110 feet high with walls 12 feet thick. Most of the Norman architectural features remain around the Keep - especially the chevron stone carvings and the splendid arch, which spans the entire width of the Banqueting Hall and is the widest Norman arch in Western Europe. There are beautiful woodland and lakeside walks and areas where visitors can enjoy a picnic. Unfortunately, disabled access is limited to the grounds. Dogs are allowed in the grounds if kept on leads. Member of the Historic Houses Association.

Open 11.00-16.00 Mon - Thu, 10.00-17.00 Sun. Closed Fri and Sat. Open Easter Sun until 1 Nov 2009.
