Description: Selected as the 'Family Attraction for Gloucestershire for 2003' by the Good Britain Guide you will see why when you enjoy a journey of discovery to see how ochre and iron ore have been 'won' here for over 5,000 years - from the Neolithic period through to the present day. The mines were famous for their ochre produced to make pigments for artist's and other natural paints; red, yellow, brown and purple ochre is still produced today and sold in the mine shop. There are nine impressive caverns to discover, with mining and geological displays throughout. Visitors will also see the ochre preparation area and blacksmith's workshop. Excellent gift shop and tempting tearoom to visit afterwards. Picnic area. Ample free parking. For the more adventurous, 'Deep Level' visits can be arranged for small groups.
