Description: John Newton was a former slaver turned evangelical preacher who also wrote world-famous hymns, including 'Amazing Grace'. He was a close friend of the poet who lived in the present buildings of the Cowper and Newton Museum. William Cowper, a leading poet of this time, was a major influence on Jane Austen and Wordsworth. The museum also has a nationally renowned lace collection, dinosaur bones, a costume gallery and trade rooms housing a collection of Olney's social history from the early eighteenth century. Another bonus is the extensive gardens which are home to eighteenth-century (or earlier) plants. The museum is of early Georgian origins.
