The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, is one of the world's unique railways running for nearly 14 miles across Kent's historic Romney Marsh, linking the Cinque Ports towns of Hythe and New Romney via the children's paradise of Dymchurch and St Mary's Bay, and on to the lighthouses at Dungeness, this is an ideal day out for all the family. Take a ride behind one of the superb fleet of one-third scale Steam and Diesel locomotives on rails just 15 inches (381mm) apart as they relive the days of the express locomotive. There are cafés at New Romney and Dungeness, gift shops at all major stations and a real gem is to be found at New Romney, above the Heywood Buffet is the Model Railway Exhibition, with a massive working model railway layout depicting scenes from mountains to the coast, there is also another working layout plus toys and models which bring back happy memories of yesteryear. The history of the line is featured in words and pictures telling the story of this, the worlds only mainline in miniature, which is still being kept alive by dedicated staff and volunteers. Opened in July 1927, The RH&DR was the brainchild of two former racing drivers, Captain J.E.P Howey and Count Louis Zborowski - who was perhaps better known as the driver of the original Chitty bang bang, (the second 'Chitty' was added for the film) unfortunately Count Louis was killed in a car racing accident before the RHDR was finished but Captain Howey with the help of world renowned model maker Henry Greenly kept the dream alive to build the biggest little railway in the world.
