Opened in 1976, the Tenterden Museum is housed in an attractive weatherboard building originally built in 1850 as a stable and store. The collections are broad in type, ranging from agriculture and industry to textiles and archives, with very strong potential as a learning resource. The six rooms on two floors house all aspects of the town's social, commercial and agricultural history. Following the Charter Exhibition commemorating the incorporation of Tenterden into the Confederation of Cinque Ports in 1449, the museum now houses a diorama replicating medieval shipbuilding at Small Hythe. To compliment exhibit, the entrance room houses the artefacts found by the 'Channel 4' TimeTeam when they excavated a site establishing that ships were built there for the medieval Royal fleet. Visitors are surprised how extensive and diverse the collection is with artefacts ranging from a 1500 BC flint axe head to the reproduction of a typical Victorian kitchen.
