Development work at Alton Towers
30/11/2007
Closure for the winter at Alton Towers means the end of the long established area known as Merrie England.
Merrie England's main rides will survive its retheme in the new year, though the much maligned Splash Kart Challenge has already become the first confirmed casualty of the makeover and it's not likely to be the last.
After the Hullabaloo, March 15 2008 is the next big date for your diaries, as this is when the new season is due to begin in earnest. Highlights to look forward to include Mutiny Bay, the park's new pirate themed area and its big new ride, Battle Galleons. The Bay will also be home to two of the park's longest standing stalwarts, The Flume and Marauder's Mayhem, the new look Tea Cup Ride.
On top of all this it is hoped that the beginning of 2008 will see the reopening of a new and improved Sky-Ride, rebuilt after a fire caused by a halogen lamp destroyed the roof of the ride's Forbidden Valley station.
